About Graham Downes
GRAHAM T. DOWNES AIA RIBA NCARB ISAA LEED AP
A DYNAMIC FORCE AND EXTRAORDINARY TALENT - MUCH BELOVED AND RESPECTED - GRAHAM PASSED AWAY IN 2013. HIS PROFILE IS MAINTAINED HERE AS A TRIBUTE AND TO MAINTAIN HIS URBDEZINE WRITINGS.
Graham Downes has practiced internationally for over twenty five years and is registered in his native South Africa, in Great Britain and many states in the USA. He has established a reputation as a tastemaker for lifestyle projects and creating dynamic gathering places ranging from hotels and restaurants to retail, mixed-use and other commercially-driven urban environments.
Downes’ body of work has its roots in urban design and the articulation of public open space. His focus is always the user-experience and results show an infusion of energy and interaction that heightens this experience. Creative solutions provide successful commercial facilities that differentiate and distinguish.
His firm has architectural offices in Las Vegas and Phoenix. Other design entities include a retail design consultancy with a branch office in Denver, and a branding and internet marketing concern based in San Diego.
In addition to design services, Downes has been an active architect-developer over the past decade. The projects have been predominantly in urban areas with an emphasis on renewal and redevelopment. His passion is the adaptive reuse of structures for reasons of cost-efficiency, sustainability, speed to market and applying intrinsic existing character.
Real estate entities are multi-family, commercial office and mixed-use. Properties include ownership and/or control of over three acres in total in downtown areas of San Diego, mostly East Village and Barrio Logan districts, parcels in the Arts District and an 11-acre lot just north of downtown Las Vegas, and three multi-family developments in Phoenix and Scottsdale.
Downes is also active as a developer consultant to land-owners. In addition, he has recently designed and is co-owner/developer of two fully redeveloped hotels: HEAT in Lake Havasu and The Padre Hotel in Bakersfield.
