Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) this month started work on an asbestos removal project at its Powell Street station.
The project includes taking away fireproofing material on steel beams installed when the station was constructed almost 40 years ago, according to the BART website.
The common materials used four decades ago for fireproofing contains traces of asbestos. BART officials have said that they are removing the materials with care and have sealed off the area with a protective plastic sheeting to keep public exposure at bay. Work on the project is expected to continue until September 2012.
