About Sandhya Sood

Sandhya Sood, AIA CGBP is a California licensed, award winning architect and Principal of Accent Architecture+Design in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sandhya believes that sustainable spaces need to incorporate passive design to be graceful, resource efficient, adaptable and healthy to their users and community.

Sandhya started practicing architecture in Chandigarh, the iconic modern city in India planned by Le Corbusier. This setting facilitated her unique skill to blend traditional and modernist sustainable design strategies and vocabularies. Early in her career, she learned to understand the relevance of history and culture in giving form to contemporary architecture and urbanism.

In the US, Sandhya graduated with a Masters in Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley. She then worked as a project manager at Fisher Friedman Associates in San Francisco and as a community designer at Urban Ecology, a non-profit, before founding Accent Architecture+Design in 2003.

Her research and writing is published in “Le Corbusier, Chandigarh and the Modern City" (2010) and as “Julia Morgan: Architecture for Sustainability” (2012).

Sandhya was a project partner of the state wide Julia Morgan 2012 Festival and currently serves on the DOCOMOMO board for the Northern California Chapter. She enjoys aqua floating, visual art and solving spatial problems in her REM sleep.

Panorama from the University Club atop California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley.

While I was a graduate student at UC Berkeley studying architecture, ideas were always buzzing around; at design charrettes, guest lectures and of course, at the dining table. International House, where I lived, was home to residents from eighty countries enrolled in various academic programs. Our insatiable thirst for learning extended to coffee hours and dinner, with enough food for thought to go around.Continue Reading Celebrating Uncharted: The Berkeley Festival of Ideas
