The bureaucracy has been set up to empower anti-housing forces that delay or deny projects at every turn… We need to build more housing near employment centers and transit.”

How San Diego’s Downtown Scores on 12 Point ‘Vibrant Downtown Strategies’ Test

I-5 downtown   A recent article by John Karras, founder of consulting firm UrbanSCALE, offered “12 Strategies That Will Transform Your City’s Downtown.”  The article was a good selection of the many revitalization strategies, and addressed some important sticking points, e.g., transitioning from auto-orientation and healing the gashes created by the the last half century of urban freeway construction.  One or two of the strategies are still-controversial or not widely accepted, e.g., eliminating minimum parking requirements (even imposing maximum parking restrictions), which made the article even more of a worthwhile read. City – Park Streetcar Feasibility Study Completed.

Historic San Diego StreetcarSan Diego Metropolitan Transit System has released its City/Park Streetcar Feasibility Study. The proposal seeks ultimately to form a loop connecting downtown, Balboa Park, Golden Hill, South Park, North Park, Hillcrest, and Banker’s Hill. Gangding BRT StationSANDAG and the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) will be launching a new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service in the San Diego region. BRT will run on dedicated bus-only lines and bring frequent and better-connecting service. It will not require a large amount of new infrastructure as underground subway systems would, and should only cost a fraction of that.
